Community Center

The heart of The Sewist Society will be our community center.

We aim to bring awareness and spotlight sewing as a skill/trade that we need to value again. We will uplift sewing and seamstresses and bring attention to the gender and class issue that has become embedded in the current sewing factory culture, as well.

The community center will be where we house our sorting facility, where we intake fabric donations of all kinds. The sorting facility will then determine the end life for the fabric.

For those pieces that can still be used, we will have the Sewist Shop. There will be reduced cost fiber of all kinds for artists, designers, home sewists, and quilters. The center will also be the hub for our education and skill share. We have a team of artists and artisans that will lead sliding scale courses in quilting, embroidery, clothing design, draping, mending, and more. In addition to sewing and design classes, we hope to offer courses on composting, gardening, talks on sustainability, zero waste living, and more.

The community center will provide jobs in the sorting facility, operations, and skill share instructors. This will be an avenue for people to learn skills to make and repair their own clothes, or start a business as an alterations sewist, or clothing designer.
